Indoor Air Quality and Your Air Ducts

Your ducts move every breath of conditioned air in the house, so they get blamed for a lot. Some of that blame is fair: mold, pet dander and odors do collect in ductwork. But the biggest causes of poor indoor air usually sit outside the ducts. This guide shows how to tell the difference.

Where Ducts Fit in Indoor Air Quality

The EPA names two main drivers of indoor air problems: pollution sources inside the home, and too little ventilation to dilute them. Building materials, furnishings, air fresheners, cleaning, smoking and unvented appliances all add pollutants. Ducts come into play when they collect contamination and spread it, or when moisture turns them into a place for mold to grow.

Humidity: The Control That Matters Most for Ducts

"The key to mold control is moisture control," according to the EPA's mold guide. It recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent, and keeping air conditioner drip pans clean with drain lines flowing. Northern Virginia summers keep the cooling coil wet for months, so the drain pan and coil deserve attention every cooling season.

Many duct cleaning ads promise "sanitized" or "disinfected" ducts. Chemicals belong on nonporous surfaces, after mechanical cleaning, only when a problem is shown, and exactly as the label directs. Allergies and Duct Cleaning

Dust, dander and pollen that settle in ductwork can blow back into rooms when the fan starts. Cleaning removes that reservoir, but it doesn't treat allergies, and the EPA has never found that duct cleaning prevents health problems.
