What the Research Says About HVAC Cleaning

The EPA's consumer guide found little evidence that cleaning only the ducts improves efficiency, but it notes that cleaning coils, fans and heat exchangers may. NADCA's peer-reviewed 2025 study with the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Pavia measured HVAC systems before and after cleaning in buildings across four climates.

Inside a Source-Removal Visit

  1. Inspect the Equipment and Ducts

    The technician opens the blower compartment, checks the coil and drain pan, and runs a camera into the duct runs.

  2. Put the System Under Negative Pressure

    A high-powered vacuum connects to the trunk line so loosened debris moves out of the house.

  3. Agitate Each Duct Run

    Brushes, air whips or compressed-air nozzles work debris loose, run by run.

  4. Clean the Air Handler

    The blower wheel, housing, coil face and drain pan get cleaned. A flashlight should shine through a clean coil, per the EPA.

  5. Reassemble and Test

    Access openings get sealed, a new filter goes in, and the system runs in heating and cooling.

How Often HVAC Air Ducts Should Be Cleaned

There's no fixed schedule. The EPA recommends cleaning only as needed. NADCA recommends inspecting the air handler at least once a year and cleaning as needed. A yearly look at the blower, coil and drain pan catches problems long before the ducts need a full cleaning.
