Why Ducts Get Dirty
- Filter bypass. A filter that doesn't fill its slot lets dust slip around the edges.
- Leaky return ducts. Gaps pull in attic insulation, crawl space dust and wall-cavity debris. ENERGY STAR lists ducts in attics, crawl spaces and garages as a warning sign.
- Renovation work. Drywall sanding and floor refinishing with the system running fill the returns fast.
- Pets and long vacancy. Hair builds up in returns; empty homes collect settled dust.

What Happens if Your Air Ducts Are Dirty?
Heavy buildup restricts airflow, coats the blower and coil, and sends dust back into rooms each time the system starts. What dirty ducts haven't been shown to do is cause illness: the EPA says duct cleaning has never been shown to prevent health problems.
