Why the Upstairs Runs Hotter
Warm air rises, and upper floors sit right under the roof, so some difference between floors is common in summer. A large, steady gap usually has a duct cause as well. Supply ducts to upper floors often run through the attic, where summer heat and leaky joints cut the cooling that reaches the rooms. What a Duct Leakage Test Shows
A technician covers the registers, pressurizes the ducts with a calibrated fan and measures how much air escapes. For new homes, the 2021 Virginia Residential Code limits total leakage to 4.0 cubic feet per minute per 100 square feet of conditioned floor area at post-construction testing. For a 2,400-square-foot home, that works out to 96 cfm. Older homes aren't held to that number, but it gives you a useful yardstick.
Fixes That Even Out the House
- Seal leaky duct joints with mastic or metal tape, never cloth duct tape, as ENERGY STAR advises
- Reconnect loose runs and replace crushed flex duct
- Insulate ducts in attics, crawl spaces, unfinished basements and garages
- Keep filters fresh and registers open
- Ask an HVAC contractor about airflow balancing or zoning for homes where one system serves very different floors
